This book is an instructional manual for any fly fishing novitiate, but is also highly informative for intermediate fishers as well. Tom gives us down to earth, easy to read information that includes a scientific primer about the life cycle of a fly, which I found particularly useful and interesting. Tom also offers lots of advice on equipment, and most importantly, how to read water to know where the fish are, based on their behavior. As with his second book, Letters to Mac, the beauty and role of nature in the fly fishing experience is noted with love and affection. Tom offers perhaps the best advice of all: find your own style and have fun. It’s not just about the fish, although obviously, they’re the ultimate prize. It’s about the experience of the outdoors, being one with nature, and finding inner peace through fishing. Works for me! One final comment about this book, which is that conservation and the preservation of the natural world has always been first and foremost in Tom’s approach to this wonderful avocation.

Excellent book, the title says it all. If you are interested in learning more about fly fishing, read this book first.

A good, accurate introduction to fly fishing for trout. The author covers the basics and conveys that it is not rocket science as a lot of beginners are led to believe. Keep it simple when starting out and the rest will follow as you gain experience.
The fishing stories at the end are an added bonus. A very enjoyable and fact filled read.
My son and grandson took this on their first fly fishing trip and found it so helpful
if your a vet or new be like me to trout fly fishing this book is wonderful
I like the book, it's mainly about practical fly fishing. It has good points for flies to use and when to use them,
water temperature and the flow of water in the lakes and stream really enjoyed reading the book.
This is an overall mellow introduction to fly fishing. Well written and doesn't use jargon like so many books. We have placed this book in our fly fishing club library. We get about 40 new members per year and wanted a good book for them.
