Having left Greece in her youth, Stella Pierides, the author of "Feeding the Doves" returns to the country of her birth in her collection of stories that lie at the heart of Greek identity.——About the Book Greece has been in the headlines for a very long time. Recently, the headlines have been gloomy and negative, the country facing some of its most difficult years. Against this background, "Feeding the Doves" explores recurrent elements of the Greek psyche, tracing them back to challenges posed by the country's history, culture, and environment. The widow, the old loner, the refugee, the immigrant, the young, the writer, the expatriate, tell us their stories, touching upon themes at the heart of Greek being Love and loss, civil war, immigration and diaspora, emigration, poverty, religion, history and catastrophe, and above all, the will to survive. —— "What I admire here are the shining moments of revelation, of truths large and small bursting through the lives and memories of these characters. So many characters, and so rich!" – John Wentworth Chapin Founding Editor, 52|250 and A Baker's Dozen. ——"Stories to surprise and entertain, to wake and calm, to wrench and elate, to tell the Greek story, past and present, and everyone's story." – Michael Dylan Welch, poet, writer, and editor/publisher of Press Here books.

Feeding the Doves edition by Stella Pierides Literature Fiction eBooks

In this collection of short stories - most of which are very short, hardly a page long - Stella Pierides demonstrates her remarkable ability to make her protagonists and characters come alive in the reader's imagination (with the short format leaving ample space for the reader to contribute!).
Thematically all stories are centered around the Greece of today - including the historical experiences that have formed its people - and so contribute to our understanding of its current predicament (while in the way also addressing some of the biased representations of Greece and the Greeks spread in the media). At the same time, they pertain to universal human themes, such as the experience of forced migration; economic deprivation and emigration, life's stages, spirituality (symbolized in the "doves" of the title which recur in various stories), artistic ingenuity, human kindness, magnanimity, love etc. Despite their "seriousness", these issues are often treated with a light touch and unexpected humor.
A book for those specifically interested in Greece and (the) Greeks, as well as those interested in the human heart.

Feeding the Doves edition by Stella Pierides Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Every once in a while, I get a book in the mail that is unique from anything else I've ever read. As a collection of short stories, Stella Pierides' Feeding the Doves has given me a new definition of what short means, not to mention how quickly a story can be told.

Few stories are longer than a page, and none are longer than five pages. Each feels like an intimate glimpse someones life, a brief moment in time. And given that each is so quick, so fast, and yet so personal, it's saying something that Pierides is able to levy language to create this impact in such sort space. Interspersed in some of the stories are haiku, providing a poetic flare that sets of the prose.

One of my favorite stories from Feeding the Doves was The Accident, about a writer who loses control of his own writing, watching from an almost voyeuristic vantage point as the characters go their own path in spite of his best efforts. He walks away, then comes back, only to watch his computer crash, taking control of the story forever from his hands.

In another, A Quiet Miracle, we watch the moment of parenthood, coming unexpected and beautifully.

At the other end of life, Missed Many Boats, an entire story feels crafted around one line, all tightened around one page "But, no one misses the boat to Hades." It is the underworld where the dead dwell in Greek mythology, and references to Greece and its geography and culture, ancient and modern, pepper Pierides' stories. It's a wonderful setting for her flash fiction, and I found her writing a refreshing and unique collection.
This jewel of a book with its short stories that take place mostly in Greece, was well written and
full of beautiful, touching, and sometimes haunting melodic stories. I was swept away by the haiku,
and at times I felt as if I was reading poetry, so concise and lyrical it was. I particularly liked
the story about the icon painter, and the man who held the postcards for his wife.

My favorite short story was "The Heart Has Its Reasons." It was one of the longest short stories in the book
and was about a middle-aged woman, Righia, who went to the hospital near Athens for her heart. Righia waits with her
adopted daughter to be seen by a doctor. During that time she reminisces about the past and how Anna came into
her life. This was very realistically portrayed, and very touching at times, with her husband preferring a boy and asking
all kinds of questions about Anna. I would have liked to have seen this developed into a novel.

The author has a real flair for story telling, and I would definitely like to see more of these stories developed into longer pieces.
I read as a writer; thus, I'm the queen of marginalia. When I am reading a worthy book, I underline and comment as I go. In terms of a recommendation, my notations mark nearly every page of "Feeding the Doves." Although the stories are set in Greece, I recognize the characters - human conditions are universal.

Stella Pierides is the master of the short story. I liken her talent to that experience we have all had. Sometimes we glimpse someone out of the corner of our eye, and we intuitively sense the person's life story. Likewise, Pierides gives us a brief glimpse, and the reader is immediately engaged in filling in the blanks.

Each short story is complete in itself. You might think of the stories as a box of chocolates - the filling of each chocolate is different... each chocolate is delicious..
