Lord St Claire Angel Zebra Regency Romance Donna Simpson 9780821764497 Books

Lord St. Claire learns to love someone more than he loves himself. Worthy Celestine gets a happily ever after. That just about sums it up. This book is really about Lord St. Claire's evolution from charming cad who makes a game of women falling in love with him, to falling in love himself with a woman whose character is unimpeachable. Celestine ALWAYS puts others' needs ahead of her own. She took care of her ailing father for many years and now devotes herself to being governess for two little girls.

The character development of St. Claire is very good and Celestine would be pretty hard not to like. But I'm a slow reader so repetition becomes tedious for me: this book either needs to be shorter or there needs to be more plot development with the secondary characters rather than filling pages with repetitious points. A fast reader or a skimmer probably wouldn't notice this, but I became bored and kept looking at the page counter to see how much longer I had to read, which is never a good sign. Not a bad book, just needs more oomph.

** Mostly clean romance with passionate kisses and lusty thoughts.

Lord St Claire Angel Zebra Regency Romance Donna Simpson 9780821764497 Books Reviews

Ms. Simpson had me from the heroine's crumpled hands (lol). I don't know exactly what it was that captured my attention. Perhaps it was the absence of all things raunchy, or just the simplicity of the story. Yes, it is follows the storyline of many other regency/harlequin stories that have to do with spinsters/governesses/plain heroine, but I found myself to enjoy this very much. I have been trying to stay away from these types of romances 'cause they just get so old after awhile. But I definitely think that Ms. Simpson added her own flair to it. It was obvious that two stories themselves could stem from it, and I'm seriously considering purchasing both. Hmmm…we'll see. )
Celestine (h)is physically plain, arthritic, and poor with good heritage. St. Clair(H) is wealthy, second son, rake with no desire to marry. They meet when he pays a Christmas visit to his brothers(marquess) family for whom she is the governess. Thus follows his challenge to seduce her even though & because she is " plain", just to irk his sister-in-law. Somewhere along the line a relationship develops and grows deeper. Scenery is beautifully painted. Societal class delineations, place of women, and education become part of discussion as well. This author is excellent as she pulls you into the story and holds you there as you read on to see how problems are resolved. Read this only if you want to get sucked into a really good historical romance!
I truly did enjoy this novel. St. Claire and Celestine were complex and yet relatable characters. What I especially appreciated was the authors ability to seamlessly allow me as the reader to clearly see through the eyes of multiple characters. although St. Claire was a known rake and their were references to that, the author did a masterful job of making sure the reader knows that while there is a definite physical attraction between the two, this is NOT the basis of their love for each other. Instead of the characters just saying that they loved each other all the time, there were actual reasons given for such love which was refreshing to me as the reader. At times a few passages seemed a bit redundant, but by far this novel was well executed and worth the read. My only wish was that we were able to see Celestine's aunt have her HEA(I won't spoil anything) She certainly deserved one herself. I also wish the ending, although happy, was not as abrupt. That is the only reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5.

Note The content was sweetly sensual. No sex but a very nice balance of passion and love.
Okay, so this is a sweet and cheesy historical romance, but I can't help myself. I loved it! It may not be the most original or the most complex, but I thought it did a good job of showing the progression both characters went through. It really focuses on the hero over the heroine, but shows him go from cynical to truly falling for the heroine.

While the heroine is a little too-good-to-be-true and perfect, she is endearing and I identified with her struggle to find her place in the world as she struggles with a debilitating physical ailment. You really feel for her as she wants to find happiness and love, but feels it's beyond her grasp.

The hero is a great example of how a jerk and a rake can make a turn around believable, if the author spends enough time developing his character. Too often, I find these types of character never really change their ways or their change isn't set up well enough to be believable.

One thing I really liked about this story is that the supporting cast has lives of their own, but those stories don't take focus away from the main story line. That might sound weird, but the author hints at the backstories of other characters, giving us glimpses that the other characters have these full lives that exist outside of the book, but without spending a lot of time telling us about it and pulling away focus from the main characters.

I wouldn't say this book is incredibly well done, but it's solid writing and it really touched me. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be reading it again. And again. I can see it being a book I pick up when I crave a light romance.
I suspected that I would enjoy this book after reading the first line of the story ("Thank God she is so plain."). It's annoying that most romance heroines are exceptionally beautiful with a figure to match. Not only is sweet Celestine plain of face, she also has arthritic hands which swell and contort in an unsightly manner. So, we have ordinary looking heroine who is 28 and thinks it is likely that she will remain a spenster for the rest of her days.

Unfortunately, the hero is the usual handsome rake who is well off. He eventually falls in love with the mousy governess , but has his proposal of marriage turned down because she believes he is playing some sort of game.

Lots of repetitive internal dialogue becomes tedious. The story moves along well but is predictable. So, it is a fun read but not a great one.
